Phosphonic acid pka values
Phosphorous acid (or phosphonic acid (singular)) is the compound described by the formula H3PO3. This acid is diprotic (readily ionizes two protons), not triprotic as might be suggested by this formula. Phosphorous acid is an intermediate in the preparation of other phosphorus compounds. Organic derivatives of phosphorous acid, compounds with the formula RPO3H2, are called phosphonic acids. WebThe pKa measures how tightly a proton is held by a Bronsted acid. A pKa may be a small, negative number, such as -3 or -5. It may be a larger, positive number, such as 30 or 50. The lower the pKa of a Bronsted acid, the more easily it gives up its proton.

WebVideo transcript. - [Voiceover] Let's look at how to use a pKa table. Remember from general chemistry that pKa is equal to the negative log of the Ka. And the lower the pKa value the stronger the acid. pka values are used a lot in organic chemistry, so it's really important to become familiar with them. WebPhosphonic acid can be alkylated via the Kabachnik–Fields reaction or Pudovik reaction to give aminophosphonate, which are useful as chelating agents. One example is the …

WebNov 11, 2024 · pKa Definition. pK a is the negative base-10 logarithm of the acid dissociation constant (K a) of a solution. pKa = -log 10 K a. The lower the pKa value, the stronger the acid. For example, the pKa of acetic acid is 4.8, while the pKa of lactic acid is 3.8. Using the pKa values, one can see lactic acid is a stronger acid than acetic acid. WebJungas, RL (2006) Best literature values for the pK of carbonic and phosphoric acid under physiological conditions. Analytical Biochemistry 349 1-15. The author states that "..the best value for the true thermodynamic second dissociation constant of phosphoric acid in pure water at 38°C is 7.180, rounded to the nearest 0.005."
